What happens at the first appointment

  • The psychologist asks about what brings you in and what you hope to change
  • They ask about your background, health, relationships and work
  • You may fill in questionnaires
  • Together you set goals and agree on an approach

Questions to ask

  • What kind of therapy do you use, and why?
  • How many sessions might I need?
  • What can I work on between sessions?
  • What should I do if I feel worse between appointments?

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

No, you can book directly. For a Medicare rebate you need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor?

Psychologists are registered with AHPRA and have specific training in assessment and evidence-based therapy. Counsellors vary in training and are not registered in the same way.
