How long does a specialist referral last?
Most GP referrals last 12 months. Here's when you need a new one.
To claim a Medicare rebate for a specialist visit, you need a valid referral. How long it lasts depends on who wrote it:
- From a GP: usually 12 months. Your GP can make it last longer, or indefinitely, for an ongoing condition.
- From another specialist: usually 3 months.
The time starts from your first appointment with the specialist, not the date on the letter. If your referral has run out, ask your GP for a new one before your next appointment, or the rebate may not apply.
Tip: Spec Book shows when a referral is valid until, and GPs can send the referral with the booking.
