Bulk billing, rebates and gap fees explained
Why specialist fees vary, and how to work out what you'll pay.
Specialists set their own fees. Medicare pays a rebate based on the fee listed in the Medicare Benefits Schedule for that service. The difference between the fee and the rebate is the gap you pay.
- Bulk billed: the specialist accepts the Medicare rebate as full payment, so there's nothing to pay.
- Gap fee: you pay the full fee and claim the rebate back, or pay just the gap if the rooms claim for you.
If you have a lot of medical costs in a year, the Medicare Safety Net can increase your rebates once you reach a threshold. Registering as a family can help you reach it sooner.
Always ask for the fee before your appointment. Spec Book shows each specialist's fee and estimated gap upfront.
