Do I need a referral for a physio, psychologist or dietitian?
You can book allied health directly. A GP plan can get you a Medicare rebate.
You don't need a referral to book a physiotherapist, psychologist, dietitian, podiatrist or other allied health provider privately. You pay their fee, and private health extras may cover part of it.
A referral matters if you want a Medicare rebate:
- Psychology: with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you can claim a rebate for a set number of sessions each year.
- Other allied health: if you have a chronic condition, your GP can make a chronic condition management plan, which gives Medicare rebates for a limited number of allied health sessions each calendar year.
Ask your GP whether a plan suits you. Spec Book shows each provider's fee and the estimated gap with a plan.
