Do I need a referral?

You don't need a referral to see a lactation consultant. Medicare doesn't cover private lactation visits. Some private health extras policies help if the consultant is also a registered midwife, and free help is often available through public hospitals, child health nurses and the Australian Breastfeeding Association.

Questions to ask

  • Is my baby getting enough milk?
  • How can I make feeds less painful?
  • Should my baby be checked for tongue-tie?
  • When should I come back or see my GP?

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see a lactation consultant?

No, you can book directly. Private visits are not covered by Medicare, but free feeding support is often available through your hospital or child health service.

What's an IBCLC?

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. It is the main international qualification for lactation consultants.

When should I get urgent help?

See a GP the same day if you have a hot, red, painful breast with fever or feel unwell. Get urgent medical help if your baby has very few wet nappies, is very sleepy and hard to wake, or is not feeding.
