The three questions worth taking to your next GP visit

A little preparation can help you leave with a clearer plan, even when you feel rushed or nervous.

You remember the question on the way home. It happens. A short note prepared before the visit can help you focus on what matters to you.

1. What matters most today?

Write down your main concern and what you hope to understand. Put your most important question first. If you have several concerns, ask the clinic whether a longer appointment would help.

2. What are my options?

Ask the clinician to explain the next step in everyday language. Your checklist might include: What is this test or treatment for? What are the benefits and possible downsides? Are there alternatives?

3. What happens after I leave?

Ask how you will receive results, whether you need another appointment and whom to contact if things change. Repeat your understanding back if instructions are unclear.

Try this before you go

Choose three questions and save them in a note or on paper. Healthdirect’s Question Builder can help you organise questions for different appointments. Your list is a conversation aid, not a substitute for assessment.
