Common reasons to see an ophthalmologist

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Sudden changes in vision
  • Eye injuries
  • Dry or irritated eyes that are not improving
  • Squints or lazy eye in children

What happens at the first appointment

  • Your vision and eye pressure are checked, often by a nurse or orthoptist first
  • You may have eye drops to widen your pupils, which can blur vision for a few hours
  • The ophthalmologist examines the front and back of your eyes
  • They may take scans or photos of your eyes
  • They explain the diagnosis and treatment options, including surgery if needed

Do I need a referral?

You need a referral, usually from your GP, to claim a Medicare rebate when you see a ophthalmologist. In Australia an optometrist can also refer you to an ophthalmologist.

Questions to ask

  • What is the condition, and will it get worse?
  • What treatment do you recommend, and what are the risks?
  • Can I drive after today's appointment?
  • How often should my eyes be checked?

Common questions

Can an optometrist refer me to an ophthalmologist?

Yes. In Australia either your GP or an optometrist can refer you, and the referral lets you claim a Medicare rebate.

Can I drive after an eye appointment?

If you have drops to widen your pupils, your vision may be blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours. It is safest to arrange someone else to drive you.

When is an eye problem an emergency?

Go to an emergency department straight away for sudden loss of vision, a curtain or shadow over your vision, a chemical in the eye, or a serious eye injury.
