Common reasons to see a counsellor

  • Stress and feeling overwhelmed
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship problems
  • Family conflict
  • Life changes such as separation
  • Low mood and worry
  • Work or study pressure
  • Building confidence and coping skills

What happens at the first appointment

  • The counsellor explains confidentiality and how sessions work
  • They ask what brings you in and what you hope to change
  • You talk about your situation at your own pace
  • Together you agree on goals and a plan
  • You may leave with ideas or strategies to try before next time

Do I need a referral?

You don't need a referral to see a counsellor. Medicare doesn't usually cover counselling sessions, so they are paid privately, though some private health extras, the NDIS or an employer assistance program may help. If you need Medicare-rebated mental health care, a GP can talk to you about a mental health treatment plan with a psychologist or other eligible provider.

Questions to ask

  • What kind of approach do you use?
  • How many sessions might I need?
  • What does each session cost?
  • What should I do if I feel worse between sessions?

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?

No, you can book directly. Counselling usually isn't covered by Medicare, but some health funds and employee assistance programs cover sessions.

What's the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?

Both offer talking therapy. Psychologists are registered with AHPRA and can offer Medicare-rebated sessions with a mental health treatment plan. Counsellors are not AHPRA-registered, so look for ACA or PACFA registration.
