Common reasons to see a dentist

  • Toothache
  • Tooth decay and cavities
  • Bleeding or sore gums
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Wisdom tooth problems
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Children's first dental visits

What happens at the first appointment

  • The dentist asks about your teeth, your health and any medicines you take
  • They check your teeth, gums and mouth
  • They may take x-rays to look between and under your teeth
  • They explain what they found and the treatment options and costs
  • You may have a scale and clean, and get tips for caring for your teeth at home

Do I need a referral?

You don't need a referral to see a dentist. Medicare doesn't cover dental care for most adults, so costs are usually paid privately or through private health extras. Eligible children aged 0 to 17 may be covered by the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and public dental services are available for some concession card holders.

Questions to ask

  • What do I need done now, and what can wait?
  • How much will each part of the treatment cost?
  • Are there other treatment options?
  • How often should I come back for a check-up?

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see a dentist?

No, you can book directly. Medicare generally doesn't cover adult dental care, but private health extras may pay part of the cost.

What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?

See a dentist straight away. For an adult tooth, hold it by the top, rinse it gently and put it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Don't put a baby tooth back in. If there is heavy bleeding, a head injury or facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, call 000 or go to the emergency department.

Can my child get free or low-cost dental care?

Children aged 0 to 17 may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule if the family gets certain government payments, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. Ask the dental clinic to check eligibility, and ask whether they bulk bill under the scheme.
