Migraine and headaches: which specialist to see

Most headaches are managed by your GP, with a neurologist for frequent migraine, unusual patterns or when treatments haven't worked.

When to see your GP about it

  • Headaches on many days each month
  • A change in your usual headache pattern
  • Headaches that don't respond to treatment

Your GP is usually the first step. They can examine you, arrange tests and, if needed, write a referral.

When to get urgent help: Call 000 for a sudden, severe 'worst ever' headache, or headache with weakness, confusion, trouble speaking, a stiff neck or fever.

It depends on the practitioner and area. Spec Book shows live appointment times so you or your GP can see who has the soonest opening.

Can I use telehealth?

Many practitioners offer telehealth for follow-ups or first consultations where an examination isn't needed. Filter for telehealth when you search.
