High blood pressure: which specialist to see

Most high blood pressure is managed by your GP; a cardiologist or other specialist helps when it's hard to control or there may be another cause.

When to see your GP about it

  • Readings that stay high despite treatment
  • High blood pressure at a young age
  • Side effects from several medicines

Your GP is usually the first step. They can examine you, arrange tests and, if needed, write a referral.

When to get urgent help: Call 000 for very high readings with chest pain, severe headache, confusion, or weakness on one side.

Who can help

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see a cardiologist about high blood pressure?

To claim a Medicare rebate for a specialist you need a referral, usually from your GP. Your GP can also check what else might help first.

How soon can I be seen?

It depends on the practitioner and area. Spec Book shows live appointment times so you or your GP can see who has the soonest opening.

Can I use telehealth?

Many practitioners offer telehealth for follow-ups or first consultations where an examination isn't needed. Filter for telehealth when you search.
