How long is a referral valid?
A GP referral to a specialist is usually valid for 12 months, unless the GP writes a different period or "indefinite" for an ongoing condition. A referral from one specialist to another is usually valid for 3 months. Spec Book's referral letters state 12 months by default.
What do Category 1, 2 and 3 mean?
They describe clinical urgency: Category 1 should be seen within 30 days, Category 2 within 90 days and Category 3 within 365 days. Some specialists hold Category 1 times that only referring GPs can book.
Do patients need a referral?
To claim the Medicare rebate for a specialist, yes. Most allied health providers can be booked without a referral, but a GP plan (a chronic condition management plan, or a Mental Health Treatment Plan for psychology) is needed for a Medicare rebate.
Where do the open times come from?
Spec Book has readers for calendar feeds and Cliniko availability, plus a weekly-hours template. Provider publishing and online booking are not open yet. Other practice-system connections require implementation, vendor access and practice testing. Calendar feeds do not write bookings back.
Can I message a specialist directly?
Yes, if you're a referring GP or practice clinician. Messages are linked to the patient's referral. They're not for emergencies: call 000.
Is Spec Book free?
Searching and booking are free for GPs and patients. Providers list free during the pilot.
